Friday, August 14 Tonight folks have the chance to celebrate one of mankind’s greatest, most important accomplishments: Beer. The North Side’s Carnegie Science Center’s Science of Beer evening provides tasters with a souvenir glass to sample ten beers from eight local breweries including Duquesne, Straub, and North Country Brewing.
Saturday, August 15 For those of us too poor and/or lazy for Bonnaroo or SXSW, Pittsburghers can simply visit Rock All Night Lawrenceville, the local hotspot’s all-day music festival, starting at noon and running all the way until 2 am. Hosted by RANT Pittsburgh, the event is sprawled out across the entire neighborhood with different acts at different venues.
Sunday, August 16 For 27 years the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has graced the area with their free Ballet Under the Stars program at Hartwood Acres. This year, the dance company will look back at previous season’s works and also premiere a new neoclassical ballet by principal dancer Yoshiaki Nakano.
Monday, August 17 Fans of the Pirates have a chance to see an artifact from one the team’s proudest moments. At the North Side’s Museum of Photographic History, the Photo Antiquities’ Victorian-era center is currently displaying the very camera which snapped the iconic photo of Bill Mazeroski rounding the bases after his 1960 World Series-winning home run. “Maz’s Camera” is on view through the end of the month.
Tuesday, August 18 Continuing the photography track, Framehouse & Jask Gallery will be hosting As Good as the Guys: Women Photographers in Pittsburgh, an exciting exhibition of local photographers showcasing contemporary work; also featuring a selection of vintage photos from local pioneers who broke through the once male-dominated art form. The exhibition opened August 14 and runs through September 26.
Wednesday, August 19 The rivers are cleaner than they used to be. Promise. Take advantage with the free Venture Outdoors’ TriAnglers fishing event. Meet under the Clemente Bridge downtown and work with the experiencing fishing experts on hand to help cast your rod right. (Bait and equipment are free!) Reservations required.
Thursday, August 20 Since 2002, the Bloomfield neighborhood has been the place to be this time of year with their annual Little Italy Days festival, the region’s largest heritage celebration. Running through the weekend and featuring everything from bocce to a Lady Gaga cover band, Thursday’s festivities include swing dance lessons and music by Dr. Zoot, Pittsburgh’s own Italian Big Band — all free!
