Belt Publishing will be publishing an anthology of essays about Midwestern architecture in 2019.
Alexandra Lange, architecture critic for Curbed and author of Writing About Architecture, The Dot Com City: Silicon Valley Urbanism, and other books, will be writing the introduction.
Belt Publishing is currently seeking pitches from writers, architects, and anyone with an interest in the topic. Belt’s interest is in covering both conventional and unconventional architectural sites and topics, such as the following:
- Prairie Style houses
- Supper Clubs
- Midwest Modernism
- Great Midwest architects (Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, etc.)
- Robber Baron homes
- Beaux Arts buildings
- Towns with unique architectural heritage (such as Columbus, Indiana)
- Rust Belt ruins
- Post-modernism
- Kitsch
- Suburban architecture
- more!
Essays can be personal, researched, historical, serious, humorous, etc. What Belt Publishing is looking for are smart insights, sharp writing, and a refusal of nostalgia.
Writers should pitch essays that do not require images for them to be successful in book form; we will make decisions about images later in the process.
All contributors will be compensated.
Please send pitches of 1-3 paragraphs, along with a short bio, to [email protected] by January 30, 2018. Accepted essays will be due July 1, 2018. Tentative publication date will be May 2019.
