It is with great pride that we at Belt announce the birth of our newest book: Aaron Foley’s How to Live in Detroit Without Being a Jackass, which officially hits the streets today.
You’d be excused for thinking we were late to our own party. In the last few weeks Foley and Jackass have collected kudos from Next City, Deadline Detroit, Eater Detroit, Jalopnik, the Hub, and Vanity Fair, which praises the book as “required reading not only for actual or potential newcomers to the Motor City, but for anyone participating in contemporary global urbanization who would like to avoid behaving like a subjugating dick” — and notes that Foley “possesses a preternatural ability to parse issues of race, class, urbanism, and pop culture in a complex and generous way that avoids tired orthodoxies and knee-jerk justifications but is always on the proper side of social justice.”
Meanwhile, Aaron himself has been making the media rounds. Check him out here discussing the book with WDIV’s Devin Scillian!
In the weeks to come Aaron will be making the rounds in person, with readings and related events across Detroit and beyond. “Like” the Jackass Facebook page to make sure you don’t miss out on a single one.
Can’t wait for the party? Order your copy of the book direct from Belt, and do your part to support independent publishing and fine Rust Belt journalism in the days and months to come.
And read the essay that started it all here. We’re proud to have published it in A Detroit Anthology two years ago, and prouder still of what it has become. Thanks so much to everyone who’s helped us see this Jackass of a book into the world.
