Belt is hiring a Managing Director to oversee the expansion of our book publishing arm. The position is part time and the hire can work remotely. The position will initially focus on spearheading our development of a more robust internal infrastructure and outreach to booksellers, and then shift to focus on acquiring, editing and marketing new titles. Duties include:
- coordinating with book distributors
- working with printers
- developing marketing and publicity plans
- creating catalogs
- writing the copy for a new Belt Publishing website
- introducing our books to booksellers and librarians
- acquiring and editing new titles
Knowledge of the Rust Belt is not essential; knowledge of book publishing is. Candidate should be independent, self-motivated, and enjoy bringing new ideas to the table. This is a very fluid position that will require putting on a variety of different hats, so you should be able to shift gears quickly. In exchange, you will be granted a lot of latitude, creative freedom, flexibility over your time, and a chance to participate in the expansion of a new press that already has a proven brand and great reputation, pays all authors and editors advances, and sells healthy numbers of copies. We will be publishing seven titles in 2016 and will continue to expand in 2017. We would love to find someone as eager as we are to become a bigger and better — yet still quality- and community-driven — press.
The time commitment is approximately 10-15 hours/week for the first six months; that may increase by summer of 2016. Compensation will be commensurate with experience; we are happy to hear from people at all stages of their career. We are open to reshaping this position for the right person.
